CKT-UTAS TEAM WIN COMPETITIVE RESEARCH GRANT FOR IMPROVEMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION IN GHANA

A Team of researchers from the C. K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences has won two streams of a competitive research grant (one call) for the improvement of environmental sanitation in Ghana.

The first award of One Hundred and Sixty-One Thousand, Seven Hundred Ghana Cedis (Gh₡ 161,700) was in respect of innovative management and utilization of liquid waste constituents while the second award of One Hundred and Fifty-Two Thousand, Four Hundred and Sixty Ghana Cedis (Gh₡ 152,406) focused on the thematic area household waste utilization services and willingness to pay. The call which targeted competitive teams of experienced researchers with multi-disciplinary expertise from public universities in Ghana was made by the Environmental Sanitation Research Fund (ESRF), an off-shoot of the Jospong Group of Companies.

The Principal Investigator and Head of the Department of Environmental Science Dr. Melvin-Guy Adonadaga disclosed that the process began with the submission of concept papers by researchers from 15 public universities in Ghana, whereupon, successful applications were shortlisted and awarded grants in different thematic areas.

He further indicated that the first grant was geared towards improvement in environmental quality with a focus on organic matter degradation, pathogen removal, and provision of raw materials for weaving and roofing while the second project focuses on assessing how price, peers, and perceptions influence sustained utilization of waste bins for solid waste management within the Navrongo Municipality.

 “The liquid waste project is an entirely CKT-UTAS affair, involving me and Dr. Mohammed Asaah, while the household waste utilization proposal was developed by myself and a Team from the Navrongo Health Research Center,” Dr. Adonadaga added. The total amount for the call is Five Million Ghana Cedis (Gh₡ 5,000,000).

In a related development, the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research (SGSR) Prof. Mohammed Muniru Iddrisu who led the delegation to Accra to receive the award hinted that University Management, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eric Magnus Wilmot is discussing with the Jospong Team, the possibility of constructing a graduate school building with funding from the Jospong Group of Companies.

The Jospong Group of Companies established the Environmental Sanitation Research Fund to provide exclusive opportunities for the implementation of practical and sustainable environmental sanitation research by public universities in Ghana. It is also intended to bridge the gap between academia and industry such that specific industry problems will be identified and researched for sustainable solutions.
